Practical Tips for Shopify Merchants to Embrace Sustainability

Guest post by Rolando Casanova, Managing Director at Internel

In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, sustainability has become a critical factor for success. As more consumers, particularly millennials, prioritise eco-friendly practices, e-commerce businesses must adapt to meet these expectations. In this post, we will explore practical tips for achieving sustainability in e-commerce logistics, focusing on how Shopify merchants can implement these strategies to enhance customer satisfaction and brand reputation.

But before diving into sustainability, we should address another crucial aspect of e-commerce: the unboxing experience. This, combined with sustainable practices, ensures a perfect buying experience for your customers.

Reflecting on the Past

In the past, customers visited brick-and-mortar stores, where their buying decisions were influenced by the store's appearance, the product offering, and interactions with the staff. A clean, well-maintained store with friendly staff would enhance the buying mood, often leading to more purchases.

Conversely, a dirty store with unfriendly staff would drive customers away. Today, these principles still apply but in an online context.

Today’s Online Shopping Experience

Nowadays, customers shop online, and having a great website, easy navigation, transparent terms, and a good product offering are essential. However, one often underestimated aspect is the 'unboxing experience'.

This involves how the parcel is delivered on the last mile to the customer. Who delivers it? How easy is it to receive or collect the parcel? How is the delivery communicated to the customer? And most importantly, what is the state of the packaging and products upon receipt?

The physical receipt of a parcel is the first tangible contact with your online shop and is as important as a friendly shop assistant. If this experience is poor, customers are less likely to return for repeat purchases and more likely to leave negative reviews or return the products.

Great Packaging for Great Products

If you sell premium products, the way you pack and ship them is crucial. Quality packaging puts the final stamp on your product offering and enhances the overall customer experience. Using sustainable materials for packaging is key.

The Importance of Sustainability in E-commerce Logistics

Sustainability in e-commerce logistics is no longer just a trend; it’s a necessity. With increasing awareness about environmental issues, consumers are looking for brands that align with their values. Implementing sustainable practices in logistics not only helps the environment but also improves customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

Key benefits of sustainable logistics:

  • Enhanced brand image: Today’s consumers are more informed and concerned about the environmental impact of their purchases. Brands that adopt sustainable logistics practices can differentiate themselves from competitors. For instance, eco-friendly packaging can significantly enhance a brand's reputation. Customers are more likely to support and stay loyal to brands that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.
  • Increased customer loyalty: When consumers know that a brand is committed to reducing its environmental footprint, they are more likely to make repeat purchases. This loyalty can translate into higher lifetime value and positive word-of-mouth referrals, which are invaluable in the e-commerce world.
  • Cost savings: Clever packing processes and efficient packaging reduces material costs. By exchanging conventional materials such as plastics or conventional paper through clever alternatives, i.e. recycled or organic, biodegradable materials, the single parcel costs can be reduced and not increased; a cliché that we often hear.

Practical Tips for Implementing Sustainable Logistics

1. Use Eco-friendly Packaging: Using sustainable packaging materials is one of the most visible ways to demonstrate your commitment to the environment. Recyclable, biodegradable, and reusable materials can significantly reduce your environmental footprint.

Best Practices:

  • Choose recyclable materials: Choose packaging made from recycled or natural materials that can be recycled by consumers. These are more likely to recycle if the process is straightforward. Using materials such as corrugated cardboard, which is widely recyclable, makes a significant difference.
  • Minimise packaging: Reduce the size and amount of packaging to avoid unnecessary waste and lower shipping expenses. Over-packaging is a common issue in e-commerce. Not only does it contribute to environmental waste, but it can also lead to higher shipping costs.
  • Use eco-friendly fillers: Replace traditional plastic fillers like bubble wrap or foam peanuts with paper or biodegradable alternatives. Alternatives such as recycled paper, honeycomb paper, and air pillows made from plant starch materials provide similar protection for products without the negative environmental impact.

2. Leverage Technology for Efficiency and Control: Use technology or a logistics partner to track and manage your inventory and shipments more efficiently. This can help reduce waste and ensure timely deliveries.

Best Practices:

  • Inventory management systems: Implement systems that track inventory levels in real-time and provide accurate stock data. These systems also predict demand patterns, enabling better inventory planning and reducing the risk of unsold stock.
  • Shipment tracking: Use tracking technology to monitor shipments and reduce delays; thus, allows you to monitor the status of shipments in real-time, providing visibility into the delivery process. This can help identify and address any issues promptly, ensuring that products reach customers on time and in good condition.
  • Undelivered parcels: Implement measures to avoid undelivered or uncollected parcels. Monitoring parcels in transit is essential and the communication with the consumer when it will be delivered or where it waits for collection. Consumers are defrauded daily by false carrier notifications, the key to reduce undelivered parcels is to take this process in your own hands.

3. Do’s and Don’ts in Practice: At Internel, we ship thousands of parcels daily to ensure our customers have the best possible and sustainable unboxing experience. Contrary to popular belief, using ecological materials for packaging is not expensive. Costs can be offset by clever packing processes, and can range from €0.10 to €0.15 per parcel, depending on its size.

Best Practices:

  • Use truly ecological materials: Eliminate plastics altogether. Use certified paper materials, cardboard boxes, paper fillers, and paper sealing tape.
  • Ensure consumers recognise such materials: Clearly label recycled or certified materials on the outside of cardboard boxes and on plant-based materials to avoid confusion with plastics and generate the adverse effect of what you intended.
  • Recycle rather than reuse: While reusing is often encouraged, ensure that reused materials do not compromise the unboxing experience. Recycle materials properly to maintain a premium look and feel, instead of sending shredded boxes inside your parcels to your customers that create dust.
  • Avoid greenwashing: Be genuine in your sustainability efforts. Educated consumers can easily identify superficial claims. Ensure your actions match your sustainability statements. Telling consumers about beehives on your building roof or procuring materials locally is quickly recognised and rated as greenwashing.

The Role of Sustainable Logistics in Enhancing Customer Experience

Customer experience is crucial in e-commerce, and logistics plays a significant role. Sustainable logistics practices can enhance the overall shopping experience, leading to positive reviews and repeat business.

Example: Imagine a customer purchasing natural cosmetics and receiving their order in eco-friendly packaging. This consistency between the product's branding and the packaging reinforces the customer's decision and leads to positive feedback. Conversely, receiving a natural product in plastic packaging can cause disappointment and harm the brand’s reputation.

Key Points:

  • Consistency with brand values: Ensure that your logistics practices align with your brand’s sustainability values. Brands that market their products as natural or eco-friendly must ensure that their logistics practices reflect these values and packaging and shipping methods align with the brand's sustainability commitments to maintain credibility and trust with customers.
  • Positive reviews: When customers receive their orders in eco-friendly packaging, it reinforces their perception of the brand's commitment to sustainability. This positive experience can lead to glowing reviews and recommendations; as satisfied customers are more likely to leave positive reviews and recommend your brand to others.
  • Customer retention: Sustainable practices can help retain customers who value environmental responsibility. Customers who value sustainability are more likely to remain loyal to brands that share their values. By consistently delivering a positive, eco-friendly experience, brands can build long-term relationships with their customers.

Conclusion

Sustainability in e-commerce logistics is essential for meeting consumer expectations and enhancing brand reputation. By implementing eco-friendly packaging and leveraging technology, Shopify merchants can create a positive impact on the environment and their bottom line. Embrace the change, and once you see how your customers love it, you will be motivated to do more.
